Brenden Sanborn's custom ink portrait on a book page with paint markers and coffee on his studio table

Some of my favorite pieces are painted on pages pulled from old books. The paper has history in it. Somebody read those words years ago, and now a face sits right on top of them.

How they’re made

Each portrait is about 6 by 9 inches, painted in ink and gouache on a real book page. I choose every page by hand. It has to be sturdy enough to take ink and water without curling up, and it has to feel right. The words are random, but somehow they always seem to belong with the person painted over them.

Painted from your photo

I paint these as custom pieces too. You send me a photo, of yourself, someone you love, or two people together, and I paint it onto a page I’ve picked for it. It ends up being part portrait, part keepsake, part story.

How to ask for one

Go to my contact page and choose Something else. Tell me who you’d like painted and a little about them. I’ll write back with the details and current pricing.

Every one of these is a one of one, made for you. That’s the part I love most.
